1, paper opening

If the folio selection is not reasonable, will make the side material increase, the effective use of paper area is reduced. Books with more short lines, such as horizontal poetry, use 32 copies, with a lot of blank incised and stapled mouth, and more paper. If you use a long and narrow 36 - folio, you can save paper. If the folio is too small, the number of folds and the material loss is more. In order to facilitate printing, try not to use or less irregular folio, so as to reduce the cost of printing.

 

2. Paper materials

Paper material accounts for a large proportion in the cost of books, accounting for more than 40%. Therefore, reasonable selection of paper materials is an important aspect to reduce the cost of books.

 

For ordinary books, such as compilation, learning materials, literary and artistic reading materials, 52g/m2 (hereinafter referred to as 52g) letterpress paper is fine for paperback, 60g or 70g offset paper can be used for hardback.

 

Songs, children's books monochrome available 60g paper, color available 80g offset paper.

 

Textbooks generally use 49-60g letterpress paper; Reference book paperback with 52g relief paper, hardback can choose 40g dictionary paper, general technical standards can be 80 ~ 120g offset paper.

 

Pictures and albums, generally use 80 ~ 120g offset paper or 100 ~ 128g coated paper; According to the degree of precision printing of the album, the choice of offset paper or coated paper and gram weight. New Year pictures, propaganda pictures generally use 50 ~ 80g single-side offset paper, comic book with 52 ~ 50g letterpress paper, advanced exquisite small picture with 256g glass card.

 

Magazines generally use 52 ~ 80g paper, monochrome generally use 60g writing paper or offset paper, color generally use 80g double plate paper.

Book magazine cover, inserts and lining: cover within 200 pages generally use 100 ~ 150g paper, 200 pages above use 120 ~ 180g paper; Insert with 80 ~ 150g paper; Lining page according to the thickness of the book generally between 80 ~ 150g selection.

 

The same kind of paper, the number of grams, the higher the price, the gram weight of the text paper increases, the spine thickness also thickens, and sometimes must adjust the gram weight of the cover paper and the number of open, which will produce a series of joint relations, often increase the cost of paper.

Carefully choose paper materials, but can not cut corners, such as ordinary paper printing more fine network cable version, will make the layout blurred, all invalid, resulting in waste. Newsprint can be used for ordinary reading, and books that need to be preserved for a long time can not be easily weathered newsprint.

 

3. The number of book pages

Try to avoid zero pages when assembling a group. Because in addition to a book, there are other parts, such as four covers, title page, preface, table of contents, copyright page and so on, and each part may have different paper, it is not difficult to make the total number of the same type of paper into a multiple of 4.

 

4. Binding form and layout design

Commonly used book binding form horse set, flat set, lock line set, binding, etc. Horse binding, lock line binding and binding this several forms of binding, can be the center of the page at the plate heart design is smaller. If it is a flat form, the center of the page at the plate heart should be relatively large, because the flat book mouth to occupy about 5mm.

 

When designing a manuscript, the size of the text font, the density of the lines, the width of the surrounding space, the occupied line and the empty line of the title, and so on, are related to the cost of the book. For example, if the book is an ordinary 32 folios, the original design is to row 5 words horizontally, 26 words ×25 lines on each side = 650 words, 5/8 lines between the lines, 240,000 words of the manuscript, a total of 370 faces; If the arrangement is changed to 26 words x 27 lines = 702 words, with 1/2 lines empty, only 342 faces need to be arranged; There is a difference of 28 sides between the two specifications. In the number of editions, paper, binding and other links, we can reduce the cost of books. Of course, it does not mean that the closer the layout is, the better. For children's books, the words should not be too small and the spacing should not be too narrow. It means to save paper materials as much as possible to reduce the cost of books under the premise of adapting to the content of manuscripts and readers.

 

5. Reasonably determine the size of the cover

When designing the cover, it is necessary to design according to the size of the finished book, the thickness of the spine and the size of the mouth. In the design of the mouth size, generally in the case of no waste of paper for printing can make the mouth slightly larger, most of the above 30mm. But some cover designers do not understand the paper specifications, open number and printing performance, in the cover design, not according to the number of paper open random size fixed down, plate often do not meet the paper specifications open number requirements and waste, now most book cover after printing need to cover, thus increasing the cost of the film.

 

For example, a set of books is divided into upper and lower volumes, which are large 32 open books, each of which has about 600 faces, printed on 52g paper, the spine thickness is 22mm, the cover is offset printing, the upper and lower volumes are printed with 20,000, and the cover is covered with film after printing. Because the designers do not know the size of the paper opening, the design of the mouth is 65mm, such a large mouth, it needs to use 787×1092 1/16 paper printing, if the design according to the number of paper opening, the mouth design is 40mm, it can be printed on 787×1092 1/8 paper. These two printing fees, paper and film fees, the difference is about 4000 yuan. It can be seen that, when carrying out the cover design, the designer should have some understanding of the paper specifications and opening number, and try to consider reducing the cost of books in the cover design to avoid unnecessary economic losses.

 

Some cover and front and back lining design is relatively simple, printing a few spot color, printing volume is not large, plate making can be considered to make copper zinc plate, printing can be printed by plate machine, because plate printing is a single small sheet printing, can be used in flowers, but also can be cut into small sheet printing. This can improve the utilization of paper, plate printing costs can also be reduced.

 

6. Binding materials

In the selection of hardcover cover materials, should control the use of leather, cotton, hemp, silk, wool and other fabrics, as far as possible to use tough paper, lacquered paper or lacquered cloth instead, except for special needs, as far as possible to avoid using real gold foil as hot stamping materials, can be replaced by anodized aluminum, color, etc., in order to reduce the cost of books. 7. Printing process

For the general 32 open or 16 open single, two-color books, print more than 50,000 copies, the general arrangement of rotary printing. Because the rotary machine is fast and the printed pages are already folded, the cost of printing is lower than that of flat paper presses. But for books under 50,000; Lead row can be printed by large automatic, small automatic or eight-page machine; Laser phototypesetting can be printed by B-B double-sided offset printing press, which is a printing press for books and periodicals. Or on type 01 and type 08 monochrome offset presses, which are single-sided printing presses with colour rate. But using B-B offset presses is faster and cheaper than using monochrome offset presses.
